In 2014, G.S.L contributed to the illumination of cultural heritage by working on the Pont du Gard, an iconic monument listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The goal of this project was to reinvent the site's lighting by optimizing the existing equipment while offering a new architectural interpretation of the bridge after nightfall.
Rather than starting from scratch, lighting designer Guillaume Sarrouy chose to build upon the already installed audiovisual and lighting systems, completely rethinking their orientation and programming. This meticulous work transformed the perception of the monument by playing with volumes, contrasts, and light variations inspired by the natural changes of light throughout the day.
Beyond the technical challenges related to scenographic integration, this architectural lighting project had to respect the site's history and integrity while providing an immersive and contemporary nighttime experience. Every choice regarding lighting, angles, intensity, and color temperature was carefully considered to reveal the stone’s texture and enhance the depth of the structure without altering its visual identity.
This project marked an important milestone for G.S.L, demonstrating its expertise in both interior and exterior lighting, as well as lighting design for exceptional heritage sites. It perfectly illustrates G.S.L's ability to combine innovation with technical restraint, ensuring an optimized and sensitive execution suited to the constraints of a listed monument.
